Does your pet need a bed?

Ask yourself this question?  Do you have a favorite sleeping/napping spot?  Well...so do your pets.  By observing your pet's sleeping habits, you'll quickly discover their preferences.  While you may think they'd love your favorite cozy blanket, they may actually prefer a thick, comfy cushion.  The choice of bed for your pet will give them just the perfect daily resting spot.  The location of our pet's bed is equally as important to make them feel safe and secure.  Following are some guidelines to give you a start on selecting the perfect bed for your pet.  Consider these and other factors unique to your pet:

Spending some time deciding on the perfect bed for your pet will go a long way towards keeping them happy and healthy.  Keep in mind that dogs sleep, on average, 10-16 hours a day, and cats 13-16 hours a day. The very young and the very old normally sleep much more and may be active for only a few hours a day.  Needless to say, a great bed can mean the world to your pet!

How do I choose a pet bed?

To decide on the type of bed, you'll need to ask yourself a number of questions.  Also choose your location according to your pets preference.  If your pet loves to sleep in the closet - put the bed there or select a bed that encloses your pet!

We've included a number of questions along with suggestions.  Also included are a few options/suggestions to help with your decision.

Do you have a puppy that's having a hard time adjusting?

A soft, cozy bed that reminds them of Mama might soothe them.

Does your pet avoid thick cushions and prefer to sleep in the open?  This could be an indication that your pet may be overheated and needs a place they can cool off.

A cooling bed could be just the thing.  Many are available, such as the Canine Cooler or Cool Bed III.

Does your pet constantly curl up on your favorite pillow?

A big, comfy cushion might be in your pets future.

Does your pet like to crawl under blankets?

A bed with a cover or the addition of a blanket would make them happy.

Does your pet hide in a closet or corner or prefer to sleep out in the open?

A closed bed or house would make them feel safe and secure.

Does your pet shed excessively or have a condition that would require the bed be constantly cleaned?

A bed with an anti-microbial, anti-bacterial cover would make for easy maintenance.  Just make sure the covers are washable!

The size of your pet's bed is the next consideration.  This one's quite straight forward and easy to determine.

  • Since the bed is intended for sleep/rest, the way your pet sleeps is a factor.  Does your pet stretch out as long as possible or curl up in a tight ball?
  • Measure your pet while they are sleeping... length and width.  Add approximately 5"-8" to each measurement to determine the overall size of the bed.
